My first lash serum wasn’t a serum but an oil. Castor oil. Until recently, I’d snubbed the entire idea of lash serums because I believed that any formulation meant to promote hair growth contained just about the same stuff; biotin and ricinoleic acid. So I created my own lash growth serum out of castor oild and biotin.
On top of that, I resolved to maintain a healthy balanced diet of white meats, you know, chicken and lots of fish, lots of veggies and fruits, especially citrus ruits, and to stay hydrated all the time. Whatever goes into your bodu is bound to reflect outward, right? And of course knowing that a lot about how my hair grows and what length it gets to is all factored into my genes, I wasn’t trying to get eyelash extensions-length in my lashes. I mean, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but I was aiming for the best my lashes could possibly look, naturally. The promise of fuller, healthier lashes by serum adverts sounded like a dream, but would this particular DIY lash serum deliver? Spoiler alert: it did. Just not too noticeably.
Why Lash Serum?
You’re probably wondering, why invest in a lash serum at all? The answer is simple: regular mascara use, makeup removal, and environmental stressors can take a toll on them, leaving them looking sparse and brittle. Lash serums give your lashes the nutrients they need to bounce back and look amazing.
Otherwise, a healthy diet would do, all on its own, just fine. As it does for men, seemingly, LOL.
The Science Behind the Serum
Lash serums are typically formulated with a blend of peptides, biotin, and other nourishing ingredients. Peptides are short chains of amino acids that signal your skin and hair follicles to produce more collagen and elastin, essential proteins for growth and strength. Biotin, a B vitamin, is known for its role in promoting hair health and growth. Together, these ingredients should fortify your lashes, encouraging them to grow longer and thicker while preventing their falling off.
Consistency truly is key.
The question of whether lash serums work comes down to use. When you trust the ingredients in the serum to do their job, you have to do yours. Applying lash serum every night before bed ensures that your lashes receive a steady supply of nutrients. The process is slow, but with patience and dedication, the payoff is well worth the wait.
My Personal Experience
I began my lash serum journey with a healthy dose of skepticism. Would it really work? The first week was uneventful, but I stuck with it, applying the serum diligently every night. Around the one-month mark, I started to notice a subtle difference. My lashes looked a bit fuller, a bit longer. Encouraged, I continued.
By the third month, the change was undeniable. My lashes were visibly thicker and longer. They had a healthy sheen that I hadn’t seen before. Putting on mascara became fun again, mostly because I couldn’t wait to hear all the “Wait, are those falsies?” and “Where did you get your lashes done?” which, when they were falsies, made me cringe, but as my real lashes, made me squeal.
Answering Your Questions
1. How long does it take to see results?
Patience. Patience. Patience. Most people start to see noticeable results within 4 to 6 weeks of consistent use. so maybe for a full transformation, give it about 3 to 4 months.
2. Can lash serums cause irritation?
YEAH, there can be mild irritation, especially if the serum gets into their eyes. Don’t let it get inside the eye. Apply the serum carefully along the lash line and not directly into the eyes. If irritation persists, discontinue use and consult an eye doctor as well as a dermatologist.
3. Are lash serums safe?
Most lash serums are safe for daily use, but it’s always wise to check the ingredient list for any potential allergens. Reputable brands always carry out clinical testing, so I would recommend buying from one of those, unless you’re anything like me and prefer to MIY.
4. Will my lashes return to their original state if I stop using the serum?
With daily makeup application, including mascara and liner, unfortunately, yes. The effects of lash serums are not permanent. If you stop using the serum, your lashes will gradually return to their previous state over time.
5. Can I use lash serum with eyelash extensions?
Sorry, no. Some ingredients might weaken the adhesive bond of the extensions.
6. How do I incorporate lash serum into my routine?
It’s simple. After cleansing your face and before applying any other skincare products, apply a thin line of serum along your upper lash line. Allow it to dry completely before proceeding with the rest of your routine.
If you’re dreaming of lush, healthy lashes, give lash serums a try. Stick with it, and soon enough, you’ll be batting your eyelashes proudly.
